The book edited by Professors Marco A Peres, Jose Leopoldo Ferreira Antunes, and Richard G.
Watt, together with 47 collaborators from 12 countries, entitled Oral Epidemiology. A Textbook
on Oral Health Conditions, Research Topics and Methods, is a leading publication in the field
of oral health epidemiology dedicated to the fight against oral diseases and inequalities related
to oral health in different regions of the world. Based on the best scientific knowledge, the book
argues for effective and affordable solutions to meet the oral health needs of populations.
The World Health Organization promotes a public health approach based on population-based
preventive interventions and integrated patient-centered care. These strategies are in line with

The 15 chapters in the the second part, Hot Topics, approach and debate, so as to inform the
reader. the causal inference in oral health epidemiology, socio-economic inequalities in oral
health, life course oral health epidemiology, sugar consumption and oral health, oral health-
related quality of life, eco-social oral health epidemiology, use of primary care settings to
collect epidemiological data, big data and machine learning, epigenetics in oral health, the
relationship between periodontal diseases and chronic diseases, dental health services
epidemiology, bioethics of epidemiological oral health studies, epidemiology, politics, and dental
public health, water fluoridation and teaching oral epidemiology.
The 4 chapters in the last part, Methods, assess the measurement instruments used in oral
epidemiology, the reproducibility and validity of diagnostic tests, quantitative bias analysis in
dental research and systematic reviews and meta-analysis.
