LIFE IS DYNAMIC – DENTISTRY A WELL
Jean-Francois Roulet
DOI: https://doi.org/10.25241/stomaeduj.2014.1(2).edit.1

Dear Readers,
“Evidence based” is kind of a buzz word, when it comes to justify our doing as a dentist. This relates to, surgical techniques or most often to the material selection. The highest evidence comes from systematic reviews of random controlled clinical trials (RCCT). For these trials we like to see the longest possible observation times, having 10 or even better 15 years being considered the best. We all know, that the patient has a substantial influence on the outcome of clinical trials; therefore, all these studiesdeal with inclusion and most important…(full text) | (read more)

RECORDING MASTICATION ANGLES BY PLANAS’S LAWS
Cristina Maria Borțun, Laura-Cristina Rusu
DOI: https://doi.org/10.25241/stomaeduj.2014.1(2).art.1

Introduction: Planas’s fundamental laws are based on the neuro-occlusal concept, which plays a major role in the development and evolution of the stomatognatic system. The alterations of the masticatory functions contribute to the modeling of the structures that form the stomatognatic system. Methodology: The purpose of the study was to assess the masticatory stereotype of a group of young people and to analyse the functional masticatory angles. We have assessed the amplitude of the functional masticatory angles on a group of 20 students. The masticatory angles depend on the occlusal morphology (cusp size), age and masticatory…(full text) | (read more)

IS COMPARISON OF THE PREVALENCE OF DISEASE APPROPRIATE AS HEALTH INDICATOR BETWEEN TWO POPULATIONS?
Amar Hassan Khamis, Maanas Shah

DOI: https://doi.org/10.25241/stomaeduj.2014.1(2).art.2

Introduction: Prevalence is the most frequently used health indicator in order to assess the magnitude of a disease in a public health environment. It is a fraction that relates the number of screened disease cases divided by the total number of screened cases. When comparing two different study populations it is not possible to predict the proportions of old and new cases. This, when combined with variations in the health care delivery systems, makes the comparison of prevalence within two populations questionable. The objective of this study was to discuss the validity of the comparison of prevalence between two different populations. Methodology: Mathematical derivatives were presented to express the prevalence of a disease in a given population. Further fragmentation of the equations led to various probabilities pertaining to the number of old versus new cases that contributes…(full text) | (read more)

HEALING OF PERIAPICAL PERIODONTITIS – CONE BEAM COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY VISUALIZATION – CASE REPORT
Paula Perlea, Coralia Cristina Nistor
DOI: https://doi.org/10.25241/stomaeduj.2014.1(2).art.3

Aim: The clinical case highlights the outcome of a large periapical periodontitis using radiograph compared with Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). Summary: Periapical periodontitis is one of the most frequent reasons for endodontic treatments. The outcome of the endodontic procedures can be assessed either by radiographs or Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). The periapical radiolucency can increase, decrease or resolve over a period of time. CBCT, as compared to periapical (PA) radiographs shows higher accuracy in detecting the real extend of periapical lesions, facilitating the visualization of the outcome of the treatment…(full text) | (read more)

SILK FIBROIN AND POTENTIAL USES IN REGENERATIVE DENTISTRY – A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW
Maria Greabu, Maria Justina Roxana Virlan, Bogdan Calenic, Catalin Zaharia
DOI: https://doi.org/10.25241/stomaeduj.2014.1(2).art.5

Silk fibroin is an organic polymer isolated from cocoon silk fibers. Recently it has been studied as a substrate for tissue engineered cartilage, bone , ligaments, nerves, cornea and also for drug delivery applications. The current review focuses on recent advance in silk fibroin and its potential uses in regeneration therapies, mainly in the dental field. Data extraction was carried out according to the standard Cochrane systematic review methodology and the following databases were used: PubMed, Google Scholar, Medline… (full text) | (read more)

FUNDAMENTALS OF OCCLUSION AND MASTICATORY FUNCTION
Georg B. Meyer, Olaf Bernhardt, Marian-Vladimir Constantinescu
DOI: https://doi.org/10.25241/stomaeduj.2014.1(2).art.6

Aim: Craniomandibular dysfunction is an expression of the dysfunctional masticatory system. It may have diverse risk factors, like occlusal interferences, including traumatic amalgam fillings and other fillings. The article aims to present three cases of craniomandibular dysfunction generated by occlusal interferences. Methodology: Three patients with different forms of craniomandibular dysfunction were referred to dentist for evaluation and treatment. Results: Occlusal interferences were identified as the main risk factor for uncoordinated hyperactive muscles and for craniomandibular dysfunction diagnosed in three cases presented. After occlusal correction, muscular dysfunction disappeared. Conclusions: In case of reasonable suspicion of craniomandibular dysfunction, an estimate for the detailed clinical and possibly instrumental diagnostics…(full text) | (read more)

IMPACT OF ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIORS ON TOOTH LOSS
Lola Giusti, Eric S. Salmon, Richard White
DOI: https://doi.org/10.25241/stomaeduj.2014.1(2).art.7

Background: Seniors recognize the need for dental care in maintaining quality of life. Research has identified behaviors that are associated with improved dental health. Objective: The objective of this study is to determine the association of certain
attitudes and behaviors upon tooth loss. Method: This study obtained data by random selection from patients in the UOP
School of Dentistry via paper survey. Results: A statistically significant association was evident between tooth loss and seeing a dentist only when absolutely necessary, as well as going five years or more without seeing a dentist. Another significant correlation was made between smoking cigarettes and the use of cocaine or methamphetamines…(full text) | (read more)

ANTERIOR IMPLANT RESTORATIONS – CHALLENGE AND COMPROMISE. A CASE REPORT
Sorin Uram-Tuculescu
DOI: https://doi.org/10.25241/stomaeduj.2014.1(2).art.8

Aim: to present implant restorative treatment and retreatment in light of
patient feedback. Summary: A patient with extensive restorative treatment including implant supported fixed prosthodontics is presented as not satisfied with the definitive restorations, which were ultimately rejected and removed. Communication with patient was affected by the fact that he could not use his native language during discussion with the dentists involved in the treatment. Moreover, the majority of dentists who participated in the treatment could not use their native languages. After a number of unsuccessful provisional restorations, decision is made to start over the prosthetic design approach from wax-up stage... | (read more)

FULL-MOUTH ZIRCONIA-BASED IMPLANT-SUPPORTED FIXED DENTAL PROSTHESES. FIVE YEAR – RESULTS OF A CLINICAL PILOT STUDY
Chiarella Sforza, Gianluca Martino Tartaglia
DOI: https://doi.org/10.25241/stomaeduj.2014.1(2).art.9

Introduction: Full-mouth reconstruction using dental implants and CAD-CAM prosthodontic procedure is a new option model in oral rehabilitation. One of the most consolidated promising material is yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals, usually called “zirconia”. It is chemically derived from zirconium sand, partially stabilized with yttrium, and then mechanically pressed into zirconia blocks that are used for CADCAM technology. In this paper we provide the 5-year results from a pilot study on fullmouth implant-supported zirconia-based fixed dental prostheses (FMIZBRs). Methodology: Five women aged 55-75 had received FMIZBRs from the same private practice. At the 5-year follow up visit, restorations remained…(full text) | (read more)
